Pünktlich zur Fußballweltmeisterschaft 2006 eröffnete in Berlin der neue Hauptbahnhof.

Wo sich heute dieser Einkaufspalast mit Gleisanschluss präsentiert, stand bis ins Jahr 2002 der Lehrter Stadtbahnhof
Der denkmalgeschützte Lehrter Stadtbahnhof wurde 1987 zur 750-Jahrfeier Berlins für rund 10 Mio. DM saniert, jedoch im Sommer 2002 im Zuge der Bauarbeiten für den neuen Berliner Hauptbahnhof abgerissen. Als es um die Namensgebung für den neuen Bahnhof ging, plädierten die Berliner in einer Umfrage mit 70 % für die alte historische Bezeichnung.
Hartmut Mehdorn, damals noch Bahnchef, setzte trotzdem unbeirrt den Namen „Berlin Hauptbahnhof“ durch. Als Zugeständnis erhielten die Beschilderungen auf den Bahnsteigen der S-Bahn den Zusatz „Lehrter Bahnhof“.

Doch plötzlich ließ die Bahn diese Schilder einfach abmontieren. Das letzte Stück Lehrter Bahnhof war verschwunden, nachdem die Bahn auch ihr Versprechen, zur Erinnerung an den alten Bahnhof eine dort abmontierte alte Uhr in der neuen Halle aufzustellen, nicht hielt. Diese Uhr existiert zwar noch, lagert jedoch versteckt irgendwo in einem Depot.

Wie den Regionalnachrichten der Berliner Abendschau heute entnommen werden konnte, montierte die Bahn die alten Schilder in einer Nacht- und Nebelaktion wieder an. Zu einer Stellungnahme war sie aber nicht bereit. Da fragt man sich: „Was sollte das?“
